Common mistakes students make when applying

Applications · 3 min read

Avoid these frequent errors and give your application the best chance.

Most application problems are avoidable. These are the mistakes we see most often.

Applying too late

Deadlines, visa processing and accommodation all take time. Start at least several months before your intake.

Choosing only by ranking

A famous name is not always the best choice for your course, budget or career plan. Compare fit, cost and outcomes, not only rankings.

A generic personal statement

Admissions teams read many applications. Write about your own reasons and experience for this course, and avoid copying templates.

Incomplete or inconsistent documents

Different spellings of your name, missing pages or unclear scans slow everything down. Check every document before you submit.

Underestimating the total cost

Plan for tuition, living costs, insurance, flights and visa fees, and be sure you can show the required funds.

Relying on unofficial advice

Rules change. Check requirements with the university or with a counsellor who keeps up to date.
